Get ready for Mermaid Festival!

In folklore a Mermaid is an aquatic creature with the head and body of a female and the tail of a fish. A mermaid has the head and body of a male and the tail of a fish. Mermaids and Merman appear in the folklore of many cultures worldwide, including the Near East, Europe, Africa and Asia.

The San Marcos Mermaids started at Aquarena Springs. For many years they performed in an underwater show. As guardians of the San Marcos River, the Mermaids keep the folklore alive. Now you can spot Merfolks in various pools and waterways, especially during the Mermaid SPLASH Festival starting September 8th - 22nd. SPLASH is the acronym for Stewardship, Preservation, Local, Arts, Sustainability Heritage. A celebration of ALL THINGS SAN MARCOS.

As part of the celebration this year, The Mermaid Society and the San Marcos Public Library are co-sponsoring several Art Hat workshops at the library. The classes are open to the public. The Art Hat workshops are guided by DJ Domstead, Paper Artist Extraordinaire. DJ is best know for her beautiful paper ornaments that adorn the Public Library's Christmas Tree each year.

At the workshops participants will be making an Art Hat to wear during the festivities. Bring your imagination and embellishments if you like. Paper hats will be provided, but participants may bring visors or ball caps to decorate. FREE TO THE PUBLIC! Registration is available at the library.
