The Mermaid Round Up

The culmination of the Mermaid SPLASH Festival is Mermaid's Society's annual river cleanup event that takes place on the Sunday following SPLASH.  The Mermaid Round-Up is a “call to action” and serves as a first-step for community members to be introduced or “re-introduced” to riverbank and park cleanup efforts.  This family-friendly event is designed to inspire youth to model our super-hero, the San Marcos Mermaid, to be river guardians for the San Marcos River.

Participants will be joined by both enthusiasts and experts in the field and learn about the many opportunities to be involved with river protection throughout the year.

Reimagine Forgotten Community Stories

  • San Marcos Downtown Courthouse (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

The goal of the interactive storytelling event during the Mermaid SPLASH Festival is to revive forgotten stories about the Meadow Center where a quirky history of the town has been hidden, lost and nearly forgotten. It is to remind the community about the cultural and personal heritage of our shared places.

By allowing community members collaborate in drawing on the same workspace, they share the same canvas (walls and building), fill in the gap of forgotten stories and create a new one through a shared vision. This interplay empowers the diverse range of community members and strengthens the unity of their shared identity.

Mermaid Festival Paper Art Hat Making

Get ready for Mermaid Festival!

In folklore a Mermaid is an aquatic creature with the head and body of a female and the tail of a fish. A mermaid has the head and body of a male and the tail of a fish. Mermaids and Merman appear in the folklore of many cultures worldwide, including the Near East, Europe, Africa and Asia.

The San Marcos Mermaids started at Aquarena Springs. For many years they performed in an underwater show. As guardians of the San Marcos River, the Mermaids keep the folklore alive. Now you can spot Merfolks in various pools and waterways, especially during the Mermaid SPLASH Festival starting September 8th - 22nd. SPLASH is the acronym for Stewardship, Preservation, Local, Arts, Sustainability Heritage. A celebration of ALL THINGS SAN MARCOS.

As part of the celebration this year, The Mermaid Society and the San Marcos Public Library are co-sponsoring several Art Hat workshops at the library. The classes are open to the public. The Art Hat workshops are guided by DJ Domstead, Paper Artist Extraordinaire. DJ is best know for her beautiful paper ornaments that adorn the Public Library's Christmas Tree each year.

At the workshops participants will be making an Art Hat to wear during the festivities. Bring your imagination and embellishments if you like. Paper hats will be provided, but participants may bring visors or ball caps to decorate. FREE TO THE PUBLIC! Registration is available at the library. Yakona Filming - Funboat Adventure Launch

Y'all. It's time.

WE ARE HAVING A LAUNCH PARTAYYYYY!
That's right! FUNBOAT Adventures has been nesting and getting all set up for business, and now we are ready to present ourselves to you, our local community, as official debutante FUNBOATERS!

Please join us as we celebrate our big *Splash* into entrepreneurship and sustainable tourism.

With incredible support from San Marcos Cinema Club and along with the iconic Mermaid SPLASH events, FUNBOAT Adventures is excited to host a FREE SCREENING of the multi-award winning film, Yakona, that presents a visual journey through the crystal clear waters of the San Marcos River, and we think it's a terrific fit with our mission of encouraging fun river stewardship.

The screening will also include a Q&A with the co-directors of the film: Paul Collins and Anlo Sepulveda

Prior to the 7 pm screening, we will facilitate a walking arts and culture tour along with a group river swim beginning at 5 pm. For our night owls, we will also be offering a NIGHT FLOAT following the film's Q&A, but "seating" is limited and pre-registration is recommended to join us on this San Marcos "bucket list" tradition.

Snacks and beverages (of many varieties) will be available for purchase throughout the event, and upcycling craft activities will be available for you to create your own FUNBOAT souvenirs using waste rescued from the river.

We can't wait to have fun with you all!

Please check out our website: funboatadventuretours.com and share with your friends to like us on Facebook. You can email us at funboatadventures@gmail.com, and we also also use the phone! Call us at 512-757-0540 with any questions!
